GLIFL week ten in review
Published on June 13, 2006 under Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) News Release
The Great Lakes Indoor Football League is two weeks from finishing its inaugural regular season, and celebrated with the most exciting weekend of on-field action yet. Two games were decided in the final minute (one of them in overtime, the league's first-ever), while the NY/NJ Revolution played their best game in team history. The league is averaging nearly 2,500 fans per game, as over 50,000 fans have crossed GLIFL turnstiles to date.
GLIFL PLAYOFF PICTURE
After Week Twelve, the top four teams will be in the GLIFL Playoffs. The #4 will travel to the #1 seed tentatively on the weekend of July 8. The #3 will travel to the #2 seed on the same weekend. The winners will face off for Great Lakes Bowl I on the weekend of July 22 at the home of the higher seed. If Marion clinches a home playoff game in Round One, they'd host on the weekend of July 15 due to arena obligations.
Port Huron (8-0) - Clinched home field advantage throughout the GLIFL playoffs.
Rochester (5-3) - Clinched playoff berth; will clinch #2 seed with win AND Marion loss.
Lehigh Valley (4-4) - Will clinch playoff berth with win OR Battle Creek loss; can host playoff game with wins against Marion and Port Huron AND Rochester losses to NY/NJ and Marion.
Marion (4-4) - Will clinch playoff berth with win AND Battle Creek loss; can host playoff game with wins against Lehigh Valley and Rochester (if Marion finishes 6-4, there is no scenario in which they are not the #2 seed in the GLIFL playoffs).
Battle Creek (3-5) - Cannot clinch playoff berth in Week Eleven; must win one more game than Marion OR Lehigh Valley to make playoffs (hold tiebreaker over Marion, so they win playoff berth if tied with Mayhem; Lehigh Valley holds tiebreaker, so they must have better record than Outlawz to beat them); will be eliminated from playoff contention with loss AND Marion win (at Lehigh Valley) of 35 or more points (three way points scored, second tiebreaker if all three teams are 2-2 against one-another).
***Current three-way records: Lehigh Valley (2-1), Battle Creek (2-2), Marion (1-2)***
NY/NJ (0-8) - Eliminated from playoff contention.
MARION MAYHEM 51, NY/NJ REVOLUTION 32
A spirited effort combined with a 54-yard kickoff return by Zikoma Richards helped NY/NJ to their best first half in team history, scoring 26 points in a 28-26 Marion lead. Led by three Ted Sauder touchdowns (two rushing, one passing), the Mayhem only allowed an 8-yard pass from Karim McFarlane to Albert Jones in the second half in the team's home finale win. Richards helped cement his spot in the GLIFL All-Star Game with 9 of McFarlane's 14 completions to go along with the kick return. Sauder scored two touchdowns on the ground and threw three more in his first game action in a number of weeks. Marion travels to Lehigh Valley in Week Eleven to try and enact revenge for their 41-26 Week One loss, while the Revolution travel to Rochester.
LEHIGH VALLEY OUTLAWZ 50, BATTLE CREEK CRUNCH 43
Led by Keeno Theadford after a pregame injury to Chad Schwenk, the Lehigh Valley Outlawz nearly crippled Battle Creek's playoff hopes just one week after they became the current #3 seed. Theadford, Steve Cook, and Chris Downs combined for 145 rushing yards and six touchdowns on the ground (Theadford had three of them). Theadford also completed 10 of 13 passes, his last one being a 39-yard strike to Keith McConnell that led to his last touchdown run with only 25 seconds remaining. The clinching touchdown came after a Tim Kubiak fumble that was recovered by Larry Koch. The Outlawz, plagued by injuries all season, can clinch a playoff spot with a win against Marion, or a Battle Creek loss. The Crunch need a lot of help to make the league's first postseason, but can do a lot of the work with a win in Port Huron.
PORT HURON PIRATES 41, ROCHESTER RAIDERS 35, OVERTIME
The GLIFL's first overtime contest ended with an acrobatic touchdown catch by Jermaine Jackson while running into, and over, the wall in the corner of the end zone. A capacity crowd at the ESL Sports Center watched the Raiders score the first 14 points before surrendering three unanswered touchdowns. Both teams missed opportunities to win in regulation, with Shane Franzer underhand-throwing a bad pass to a Rochester defender and two missed Will Bean field goals. Rochester held the ball first in overtime, but Maurice Jackson was held short of a first down on a good fourth-down catch. Will Bean kicked the ensuing kickoff to start Port Huron's overtime drive out of bounds on the fly, giving the Pirates the ball at midfield for their game winning drive. Port Huron has clinched the #1 seed and home field advantage throughout the GLIFL playoffs, and will play Battle Creek in Week Eleven. Rochester can clinch the #2 seed with a win against NY/NJ and a Marion loss in Lehigh Valley.
