Glacier Pilots Snap Mat-Su Win Streak

Mat-Su Miners News Release
PALMER, Alaska - Through five innings of play at Hermon Brothers Field, it appeared as though the Mat-Su Miners would increase their win streak to eight consecutive games.
However, a two-run sixth inning for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots proved just enough to earn a 2-1 victory and halt Mat-Su's seven-game win streak on Saturday.
"We've been playing really good baseball and played well tonight, but their starter kept us off balance," Miners head coach Ben Taylor said. "We had some opportunities. A call here or there, and it's a different game."
The Miners (21-13) struck in the bottom of the fourth, as leftfielder Michael Donadio lifted a ball to centerfield to plate the team's lone run of the game.
The Pilots (17-19) claimed two unearned runs off Mat-Su starting pitcher Justin Vernia with two outs in the top of the sixth to take the lead.
Vernia provided the Miners with seven innings on the mound, surrendering just five hits and one walk in the loss.
"Vern did a good job, he competed in the zone and kept us in the game," Taylor said. "There was an error behind him with two outs, but that's baseball."
The Miners threatened in the bottom of the ninth, as pinch runner Scooter Bynum safely reached third with two outs in the inning. Rightfielder Cam Montgomery slapped a ground ball toward the gap between the shortstop and third baseman, but Anchorage shortstop Kyle Watson was able to make the play at first to end the game.
The Miners return to Hermon Brothers Field on Monday for a 6 p.m. meeting with the Anchorage Bucs.
