Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Quakes chipped away at an early three-run deficit, but just could not string enough hits together to overcome the stifling San Jose pitching attack as Rancho dropped the first game of a four-game set, 4-3, on Wednesday night at LoanMart Field.
Giants starter Ty Blach struck out nine Quakes batters in his six innings on the mound. Blach (W, 5-1) gave up three earned runs and walked none in his stellar outing.
A three-run third inning gave the Giants all the cushion they would need. Shawn Payne's second double of the game scored John Polonius from first, and Payne later came around to score along with Elliott Blair on Ryan Cavan's two-RBI double, putting San Jose up 4-1.
Dodgers' left-hander Ted Lilly made his third rehab start with the Quakes this season and was touched up for four runs and three walks in five innings. Lilly (L, 0-3) was relieved by fellow Dodgers pitcher Scott Elbert, who allowed one hit and one walk in a scoreless inning of relief.
The Quakes and Giants traded runs on sacrifice flies in the first inning. San Jose got a lead-off double from left fielder Payne and he came home on Cavan's sac fly. Casio Grider led off the Quakes' half of the inning with a triple to right field and was cashed in by Darnell Sweeney's sac fly to left field.
The Quakes managed just one extra-base hit after Grider's lead-off triple and six hits overall.
The home loss drops the Quakes to 20-19 on the season, but they will have a chance to earn the game back tomorrow as James Campbell (1-2, 3.10 ERA) takes the hill. San Jose will call upon right-hander Chris Marlowe (2-0, 1.69 ERA) to face Rancho.
