TAMPA -- Backup quarterback Darnell Kennedy threw for 130 yards and five touchdowns as the Georgia Force (10-7) ensured a spot in the Arena Football League playoffs with a 58-40 win Saturday night over the Tampa Bay Storm on the Amalie Motor Oil Field at the St. Pete Times Forum. Kennedy, who replaced starter Brett Elliott in the second quarter connected with CJ Johnson and Michael Johnson for two touchdowns each. They had 60 and 61 reception yards receptively. The Storm (6-11) saw the emergence of former South Florida standout Matt Grothe, who in his first AFL game passed for 161 yards and 5 touchdowns. He started the second half in place of Danny Southwick. The Storm's Amarri Jackson had eight catches for 112 yards and 3 touchdowns. Despite Grothe's timing with the receivers a bit off, he still connected on some key 4th down plays to keep a drive alive. He also showed the elusiveness he displayed at USF. It was on the 12-yard scoring pass to Jackson that he was being held by a Georgia lineman and still got the pass off. After a dismal first half, Grothe came in to spark a 20-point 3rd quarter. He connected with Michael Lindsey, Amarri Jackson and lineman Tom Kaleita in the period to pull the Storm to with 45-27. Grothe was 6 of 11 for 103 yards in the 3rd period, his first real look at Arena Football after several weeks of workouts and practice with the team.
