
Gary Hunter to Take On New Role With CBA

Boise, ID (April 3, 2006) - Continental Basketball Association Commissioner Gary Hunter has announced that he will be taking on a new role with the league effective April 10, 2006, serving in the capacity of special consultant.
Hunter has served as commissioner to the oldest professional basketball league in the world for six seasons. He began his first stint with the CBA in July, 1998 when he was named commissioner by the CBA Board of Directors. He rejoined the CBA in 2001 when he was unanimously selected as commissioner once again, serving in that capacity for the past five years.
"I am looking forward to this new chapter in my life, while continuing to assist in the progress of the CBA and its endeavors," said Hunter. "The opportunity to see first hand so many coaches and players grow and develop in the CBA over the years has been rewarding for me, both on a professional and personal level."
In his time as commissioner of the CBA, Hunter has been the chief negotiator with NBA senior management regarding potential merger, added five franchises to the CBA, and established the first worldwide radio broadcast and global webcast of a CBA All-Star game.
Prior to becoming commissioner of the CBA, Hunter served as Senior Executive Vice-President of the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche (1993-96) and had eight years of experience in Division-1 collegiate athletics as an administrator. The Council Grove, Kansas native was the Director of Athletics at Wichita State University (1992-93) and the University of Idaho (1988-92), while serving as Assistant Director of Athletics (1985-86) and then Associate Director of Athletics (1986-88) at the University of Kansas.
CBA History
The Continental Basketball Association recently completed its 60th anniversary season with the Yakama Sun Kings defeating the Gary Steelheads in a best-of-three-game series. The CBA is the oldest professional basketball league in the world. This past season, there were 13 CBA players called up to the NBA while 38 alums were on 2005-06 NBA opening-night rosters. There are currently 10 NBA head coaches with ties to the CBA, including Rick Carlisle (Indiana), Maurice Cheeks (Philadelphia), Bob Hill (Seattle), Phil Jackson (Los Angeles Lakers), Eddie Jordan (Washington), George Karl (Denver), Sam Mitchell (Toronto), Flip Saunders (Detroit), Jerry Sloan (Utah), and Terry Stotts (Milwaukee).
