MIAMI, Fla. (October 7, 2013) - Northern Ireland forward Daryl Fordyce, Polish striker Tomasz Zahorski and Brazilian midfielder Paulo Mendes each scored the winning goals for their respective teams - FC Edmonton, San Antonio Scorpions and New York Cosmos - during the NASL Fall Season Week 10 action.
Fordyce, who played on the Under-21 and U-19 sides for his native country, headed home a flicked on long throw-in after 31 minutes then doubled the advantage with a close range finish on the hour mark to give the host FC Edmonton a 2-1 win over Carolina RailHawks on Sunday.
The victory ended a seven game winless streak for Edmonton, while it remains in contention for a berth to the NASL Soccer Bowl 2013.
On Saturday night, Zahorski, who played 13 international matches with the Polish national team, scored his sixth goal of the season to pace the San Antonio Scorpions to their second consecutive victory at home in the 1-0 triumph against the NASL Spring Season Champion Atlanta Silverbacks.
Saturday's win also extended San Antonio's unbeaten streak to four home matches against Atlanta.
Earlier in the evening, Mendes, who spent the 2012 season with the Silverbacks prior to joining the Cosmos, scored in the second half to inspire New York to a 1-0 win at Minnesota United FC.
The result extended the Cosmos' first-place lead (21 points) in the NASL Fall Season Standings to seven points ahead of four teams (Tampa Bay Rowdies, RailHawks, United and Fort Lauderdale Strikers) that are tied for second place with 14 points each.
Seventy-five percent of the goal scored during this past weekend's encounters came from NASL international stars. Forward Martin NÃÆúÃÆñez scored the first goal for the Strikers in the 2-1 victory during the Florida derby against the visiting Rowdies on Saturday. Guyana international forward Carl Cort had the only tally late in the match for Tampa Bay in the loss.
Every Monday throughout the 2013 Fall Season, the North American Soccer League (NASL) will put its international stars - both coaches & players - under the 'NASL International Spotlight' focusing on the league's overseas connections.
