Galaxy II Run Past Arizona

CARSON, Calif. - The LA Galaxy II snapped a five-game winless streak as Charlie Rugg had a pair of goals in a 4-2 victory against Arizona United SC on Friday evening at StubHub Center. The Galaxy II's goals all came in the first half as they maintained their hold on third place in the USL PRO standings.

United opened the game brightly, and had a shot from Schillo Tshuma go over the crossbar early on, but Los Dos struck first in the 16th minute as a cross by Raul Mendiola found Bradford Jamieson IV for his fifth goal of the season. Two minutes later Rugg notched his first, again off an assist by Mendiola, as LA made it 2-0.

The game remained relatively even in the flow of action, but Arizona came undone five minutes before the halftime break as Daniel Antunez turned a low cross into his own net under pressure from Rugg to make it 3-0. Rugg added his second in the final minute of the half as a turnover in midfield came to Jack McBean, who sent a low through-ball for the former Boston College striker to run onto and finish.

Arizona would make a late comeback as Jonathan Okafor scored from the penalty spot after being brought down in the penalty area. Matt Kassel also found the net in stoppage time for United, but Los Dos' big first half proved too big of a deficit to overcome as they defeated Arizona for the first time in three meetings this season.

WEDNESDAY

PITTSBURGH 2, DAYTON 1: A pair of second-half goals by Michael Green gave the Pittsburgh Riverhounds victory against the Dayton Dutch Lions FC at DOC Stadium in a contest that had been postponed from Tuesday evening because of lightning.

Dayton took the lead in just the third minute as Aaron Schoenfeld put home a cross by Ross Friedman. Pittsburgh's Joseph Ngwenya twice came close to tying the game before the halftime break, with his second effort hitting the post, but two minutes into the second half Green would score his first with a good finish into the left corner. Green volleyed home a second in the 54th minute, and that would prove enough for the Riverhounds to take victory.

FRIDAY

PITTSBURGH 2, ROCHESTER 0: Second-half goals by Andrew Marshall and Alfonso Motagalvan lifted the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to their first home win of the season, and off the bottom of the USL PRO standings, as they defeated the Rochester Rhinos at Highmark Stadium.

After a quiet first half, the Riverhounds pushed forward strongly to start the second and took the lead in the 51st minute. Danny Earls drove an in-swinging delivery from the right that was met by Marshall at the near post to put the Riverhounds ahead.

Pittsburgh doubled its lead from another set piece, this time a corner, as Matt Dallman's cross from the left was re-directed by Motagalvan after coming through a crowd of bodies and found the back of the net.

SATURDAY

HARRISBURG 4, CHARLESTON 1: The Harrisburg City Islanders scored three goals in the opening 21 minutes as they swept to victory against the Charleston Battery at Skyline Sports Complex.

Morgan Langley and Jimmy McLaughlin each had a goal and assist for the City Islanders, as Langley set up McLaughlin for the first goal in the seventh minute with a cross to the left side of the penalty area that the Philadelphia Union loanee drove low into the net.

Jose Barril added a second for Harrisburg in the 10th minute with an excellent free kick that dipped over the defensive wall and just inside the right post, and Langley made it three just over 10 minutes later as he got on the end of McLaughlin's low cross from the left at the near post.

Harrisburg added a fourth three minutes into the second half by Matt Bahner before Charleston's Jarad van Schaik pulled a goal back from the penalty spot late on, but after its early scoring outburst Harrisburg cruised to a comfortable victory.

DAYTON 3, CHARLOTTE 1: Aaron Schoenfield had a hat trick as the Dayton Dutch Lions claimed their second victory of the season against the Charlotte Eagles at the Queens Sports Complex.

Dayton took the lead in the eighth minute when the Columbus Crew loanee got on the end of a cross by Cam Vickers and headed home for his 10th goal of the season. Charlotte came into the game more as the half progressed, and Drew Yates forced Dayton goalkeeper Matt Williams into a good save to keep the Dutch Lions up at the break.

Charlotte's pressure continued at the start of the second half, and they were rewarded in the 59th minute when Jonathan Leathers scored from close range after a scramble in the penalty area. Dayton quickly got back on the front foot following the goal, however, and Schoenfeld would score his second in the 76th minute as he headed home Shintaro Harada's free kick. Schoenfeld then added a third from the penalty spot four minutes later to wrap up victory, and take the lead in the race for the USL PRO Golden Boot Race with his 12th goal of the season.

SUNDAY

RICHMOND 0, REAL SALT LAKE RESERVES 0: RSL's Lalo Fernandez had a standout performance as the Richmond Kickers and Real Salt Lake Reserves played to a scoreless draw at City Stadium.

Richmond pressed strongly from the outset, and came close to opening the scoring in the fourth minute when George Davis IV fired a low shot from the right side of the penalty area that Fernandez saved. The Kickers forced seven saves from the Homegrown Player in the first half, with a late reaction stop from Samuel Asante in the final minute before the break arguably the best of them.

Both sides had chances to break the deadlock in the second half. RSL's Luke Mulholland hit the crossbar with his side's best chance of the game moments after kickoff, and Tishan Hanley almost stole victory for the Kickers with a clever back-heeled flick that drifted just wide of the post in the 88th minute. Neither side would find the back of the net, however, as honors finished even.
