Four Teams Clinch a Postseason Spot

September 9, 2019 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release

Boston, MA- The playoffs are set! Four teams clinched their places in Denver following Week 14. The Atlanta Blaze, Boston Cannons, Chesapeake Bayhawks, and Denver Outlaws will be the four teams battling for a title in the "Mile High City." Here are some takeaways from Week 14 in Major League Lacrosse.

Cannons Survive Against the Bayhawks

The Canons came into the weekend needing a win over the Bayhawks combined with a Blaze win over the Rattlers to qualify for the postseason. The Cannons got their win and a Rattlers loss, but things are looking interesting heading down the stretch.

The Cannons held a 10-6 advantage heading into the final quarter, but with the postseason and rankings in mind, Coach Cottle had his Bayhawks dial up the pressure. Chesapeake scored three unanswered goals in a span of a little over three minutes to make it a one goal game. Nick Marrocco secured the win with a huge save on the current leader for MLL goals and points, Lyle Thompson. The Cannons squeaked by the Bayhawks 12-11.

Challen Rogers and Zed Williams each scored hat tricks this weekend. Mark Cockerton also found the back of the net twice, including a clutch fourth quarter goal. Nick Marrocco was the player of the game in net, stopping 18 of the 29 shots he faced.

Outlaws All Alone in First Place

The Outlaws clinched more than a playoff spot with a 15-12 win over the New York Lizards this weekend. They also moved into sole possession of first place, meaning they control their own destiny as far as the number one overall seed goes in the MLL Playoffs.

This past weekend the Outlaws traveled to Long Island, knowing that a win would qualify them for the MLL Playoffs. Denver played like a team on a mission, jumping out to an early four goal advantage. Both teams peppered the goal, with Denver registering 30 shots on target compared to the Lizards 27. Dillon Ward made 15 saves for the Outlaws, Austin Kaut made 16 for the Lizards.

Ryan Lee continued his outstanding play of late, scoring four goals. Mikie Schlosser found the net three times himself. Kevin Crowley had a huge game in a losing effort, scoring five goals for the Lizards.

Blaze Going Dancing for the First Time

For the first time in team history, the Atlanta Blaze are heading to the postseason. Atlanta beat the Dallas Rattlers 15-14 in Frisco to clinch the franchises first playoff berth.

On the offensive end, the Blaze saw contributions up and down the roster with eight different players scoring goals. Shayne Jackson scored a hat trick while Liam Byrnes, Brendan Sunday, Christian Mazzone, Bryan Cole, and Tommy Palasek all scored two goals apiece. Bryce Wasserman, who arrived moments before the game via helicopter, scored four goals for the Rattlers.

The Blaze, Cannons, Outlaws, and Bayhawks have their sights set on Denver and the Major League Lacrosse Championship Weekend. But there are two weeks left of regular season where all four teams will be battling for rankings.

The semi-finals will take place on October 4th at Peter Barton Stadium, and the Championship Game will take place at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on October 6th. Tickets are available now. All games will be broadcast on ESPN2.

Championship Weekend will also play host to MLL Honors, recognizing the top players in the 2019 Major League Lacrosse Season. Fan voting for MLL Honors is open now.
