Four Phantoms grab league honors

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Mahoning Valley Phantoms Head Coach Bob Mainhardt was named the North American Hockey League's Coach of the Year at the NAHL's Banquet of Champions Wednesday night.

Mainhardt was one of four Phantoms recognized by the league for their performances during the regular season.

Goaltender Ryan Zapolski and center Dustin Cloutier were named first-team all-NAHL selections, while center Derek Graham was named to the league's all-rookie team.

Mainhardt guided the Phantoms to the NAHL's best regular season record at 47-14-1, including a team-record 19-game winning streak. Heading into this week's Robertson Cup, the Phantoms have won nine in a row dating back to the regular season.

In four seasons behind the Phantoms' bench, Mainhardt has a record of 136-80-16 and is 8-8 in the postseason.

Zapolski, a native of Erie, Pa. and a Mercyhurst College recruit this fall, led all goaltenders with a North American Hockey League-record 42 wins (42-8-1 record).

He finished third with a 2.32 goals against average, tied for third with four shutouts, had a league-leading .929 save percentage and topped all netminders with five assists.

Cloutier, who will play at Bentley College next season, hails from Berkley, Mich. He finished third in the league with 83 points and 42 goals; both Phantoms' records.

Cloutier led the NAHL with 13 game-winning goals and was tied for third with five shorthanded goals.

Graham, from Schoolcraft, Mich., finished tied for 18th with 58 points. His 40 assists tied for eighth place with 22 of them coming on the power play, tying him for fourth in that category.

Graham will attend Ferris State University in 2008.

The Phantoms face the host Fairbanks Ice Dogs tonight at 11:30 p.m. EST (7:30 p.m. AKST). The game will be webcast on www.mvpphantoms.com and carried on ESPN Radio 1240-AM WBBW.
