Forward Madison FC News Release
Forward Madison FC traveled to Virginia for a second time this season to play Richmond Kickers on Saturday, August 5th at 6pm CT. FMFC entered this match in fifth place in the USL League One standings, two places above Richmond. This is the second Henny Derby battle of the season, with Forward Madison victorious in the first showing.
The match started in a lock, with both sides going back and forth for the majority of the first half. Forward Madison seemed to control the match by holding possession; however, Richmond created a couple of dangerous opportunities on counterattacks. After the hydration break in the 32nd minute, Richmond came onto the pitch with a new sense of urgency, but Forward Madison kept its composure and defensive shape. In the 36th minute, Forward Madison midfielder Jayden Onen pressed Richmond's backline, won the ball, and played it across the box to midfielder Nazeem Bartman. Despite being surrounded by Richmond defenders, Bartman found the back of the net to put the 'Mingos on the board. Forward Madison went into halftime, leading 1-0 in Virginia.
Forward Madison started the second half with confidence, continuing to build possession and control the tempo of the match. In the 63rd minute, however, Richmond striker Emiliano Terzaghi found himself in front of the goal, but FMFC goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann came up with the save to keep his squad in the lead. In the 74th minute, Forward Madison grew their lead to 2-0 after Onen buried his first goal of the season. As Forward Madison started feeling comfortable with the score, Richmond was awarded a penalty kick in the 87th minute due to an FMFC handball in the box. Richmond defender Dakota Barnathan stepped up and put his team on the board to make the game 2-1. After seven minutes of added time, Forward Madison took home another Henny Derby trophy with a 2-1 victory over Richmond.
Next up, Forward Madison FC plays back-to-back matches at historic Breese Stevens Field on August 9th and 12th. The Flamingos play against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC on Wednesday, August 9th at 7pm CT.
