Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas (www.austinaztex.com) - Former first-team All-Pac-10 forward Maxwell Griffin signed a one-year deal with the Austin Aztex, with the club option for the next two years. Griffin, brother of Aztex defender Leonard Griffin, finished his Bruins career as the two-time reigning team Offensive MVP and leading goal scorer.
In his senior year, Griffin racked up a litany of accolades, including his selection to the All-Pac-10 team. He was named an NSCAA All-Far West selection, Soccer America's National Player of the Week on September 4 after scoring both goals in a conference-clinching clash against Stanford, nominated for the prestigious Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and led the team with four game-winning goals, moving him up to sixth all-time in the UCLA record books in that category.
"He's young, athletic and hungry and we think there's a lot of potential in Maxwell," Head Coach Adrian Heath said. "He's aware this is just the start for him, and we think with a little bit of work, we can develop him into a really good forward. He has a lot of upside."
As an underclassman, the Palmdale, Calif., native was named All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention as a junior, named consensus National Player of the Week as a sophomore and scored a goal in each of his first two contests as a freshman.
Griffin netted 28 goals overall in his career, increasing his total in each of the four seasons in Westwood. The sociology major is also one of just 18 players to tally a hat trick for UCLA in its 43-year history.
The Aztex made two more roster moves on Tuesday, releasing forward Leonel Saint-Preux and goalkeeper Ben Dragovon after failing to pass physicals due to pre-existing conditions.
Austin's USSF D-2 Pro team has two more preseason matches before its regular season begins at House Park on April 11 against the Montreal Impact. On Friday, the Aztex travel to Loredo for a clash against the PDL's Loredo Heat. The Aztex then head to Dallas on March 31 for their final tune-up against FC Dallas of the MLS.
