SAN JOSE, Calif. - The SaberCats announced today that they have been assigned former Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman Ollie Ogbu on a one-year contract. In addition, defensive lineman Luis Vasquez was activated from inactive reserve, while wide receiver Jamarko Simmons was placed on injured reserve and wide receiver Fred Williams and defensive lineman Terrance Carter were both placed on inactive reserve.
"Being able to add a talented player like Ollie is great for us at this point in the season," said Owner/Head Coach Darren Arbet. "He has quality experience at the next level and we look forward to his arrival."
Ogbu (6-1, 305, Penn State) is a rookie to the Arena Football League. Last season, he played for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League. In three games with Montreal, he recorded seven tackles and recovered a fumble.
Ogbu is a two-year National Football League veteran who spent the 2011 season on the practice squad with the Indianapolis Colts and split the 2012 season between Indianapolis and the Philadelphia Eagles. He originally signed with the Colts as an undrafted free agent in 2011 and was traded to the Eagles midway through the 2012 campaign.
The Staten Island, N.Y. native played his college football for Penn State University from 2006 to 2010. Over his collegiate career, Ogbu recorded 113 tackles (50 solo), five-and-a-half sacks and forced four fumbles. As a senior, he was named to the All Big-Ten Team and was selected to play in the East-West Shrine Game. As a junior, he recorded two tackles and forced a fumble in the Nittany Lions win over LSU in the Capital One Bowl.
