Austin Aztex News Release
AUSTIN, Texas (www.austinaztex.com) - Lance Watson, previously of the Kansas City Wizards, has signed a two-year contract with the Austin Aztex to compete for a starting job on the back line.
In four seasons with Kansas City, the defender appeared in 43 games, starting in 29. His most productive season came just last year when he started 19 games at right back and recorded an assist against D.C. United in a 1-1 draw. His 2008 season was severely limited after breaking a foot in the preseason against Velez Sarsfield, though he still managed to play in three games and record a shot in one.
"Lance is a very strong and quick player that we are excited to add to the roster," Aztex CEO Djorn Buchholz said. "Not only can Lance play in the defense, but he can play in the midfield as well, so he will be a great addition to the squad."
In 2007, Watson shined on the reserve team as the only player on the squad to play in every minute of Reserve Division play, scoring three goals in his time there to go along with two assists. During the season, he was called up to the Wizards and played in a combined 10 games in 2006 and 2007, starting in four contests.
Watson was drafted in the second round of the 2006 MLS SuperDraft out of New Mexico as a 2005 All-American and College Cup All-Tournament Team member. In addition, he was sixth all-time at UNM in both points and goals scored. The Nederland, Texas, native ended his career with the Lobos with 22 goals scored and 22 assists, good for second all-time.
