New Jersey Ironmen News Release

Newark, N.J. (Thursday, November 6, 2008) - The New Jersey Ironmen announced today the acquisition of former Cuban National Team player Rey Martinez. The three-year indoor veteran will represent the Ironmen when the second-year side opens up their 2008-09 season against the Chicago Storm on December 14th at Prudential Center.

"Because of his technical ability, Rey Martinez can do a good job at any position," Ironmen Head Coach Omid Namazi stated. "He is a good defender and also has the ability to attack out of the back."

Born in Havana, Cuba, Martinez won an indoor championship last season with the Baltimore Blast. In 14 regular season games, he recorded three goals and three assists in 2007-08. The defensive-minded Martinez began his professional career with the Cuban National Team, appearing in 17 international matches. He logged minutes in the Gold Cup, Copa Caribe and Pan American Games and netted a pair of goals while wearing the colors of his native country.

Martinez played in seven contests for the Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer in 2004, becoming the first Cuban player to play in MLS. Prior to the 2005 season, he signed with the Rochester Rhinos of USL-1 and remained with the outdoor club for three years before spending this past summer with the Carolina Railhawks. Martinez began his indoor career in 2006, playing a pair of games for then-St. Louis Steamers Head Coach Omid Namazi. He has played the past two seasons in Baltimore and has tallied 10 goals and seven helpers in 43 games.

The New Jersey Ironmen will open up preseason training on Monday, December 1, and the club has two open tryouts planned over the next month. The club will host a tryout on Sunday, November 16, at Soccer Centers in Somerset from 8:30-10:00 p.m. and at Turf City in Wayne on Saturday, November 22, slated to begin at 7:00 p.m. Players interested in attending open tryouts must pre-register by calling Gioia DiFlumeri, Ironmen Operations Manager, at 973-757-6303.
