ALBANY, NY (April 24, 2007) - The Continental Basketball Association today wishes to congratulate former CBA star Sam Mitchell on being awarded the 2006-07 NBA Coach of the Year award. In his third season as the Raptors' head coach, Mitchell totaled 389 points, including 49 first-place votes, from a panel of 128 sportswriters and broadcasters throughout the United States and Canada.
Before a 13-year NBA career, Mitchell played in the CBA for two seasons. In the 1985-86 season, Mitchell was a member of the Wisconsin Flyers franchise, were he averaged 20.8 points and 7.3 rebounds. Mitchell returned to Wisconsin for the 1986-87 season but was traded to the Tampa Bay/Rapid City Thrillers early in the season. Mitchell was a key member of the Thrillers team as they finished the season as the CBA champions.
"Sam Mitchell is a prime example of what the CBA is about," said CBA Director of Operations Dennis Truax. "Sam was able to showcase his talents for two great seasons and receive a chance at the NBA. Thirteen seasons in the NBA as a player and three more as a head coach show what a great player and a coach Sam Mitchell is, and it all started in the CBA."
