Force players honored by The Softball Channel
January 8, 2008 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF)
Philadelphia Force News Release
To honor the outstanding athletes of the National Pro Fastpitch league, The Softball Channel (www.thesoftballchannel.com) has announced its First Annual Pro Softball Awards. Three members of the 2007 team and an addition to the 2008 team were selected to the All-Star team roster.
Chelsea Spencer earned the selection at shortstop. She compiled a .333 batting average with five home runs. Spencer also drove in 18 runs and scored 25 runs to lead the Force.
Trena Peel was named as one of the All-Star team's outfielders. Peel, in her first season with the Force, tied for team high in home runs with five. She also knocked in 16 runs while posting a .309 batting average and a .454 on-base percentage.
Kristina Thorson, who was traded to the Chicago Bandits in the off season, was picked as one of the seven pitchers on the roster. In her rookie-of-the-year campaign, Thorson racked up a 14-5 record in 116.2 innings in the circle. Her 115 strikeouts, 1.20 ERA, and 12 complete games were tops on the Force.
Jackie Wong was recognized as the league's top second baseman. Wong, who will make her Force debut this summer, played the 2007 season for the Rockford Thunder. She batted .342 and was second on the Thunder in stolen bases (7) and sacrifices (6).
The NPF Champion Washington Glory garnered the most accolades, winning 6 of the 21 awards. Amber Jackson was named 2007's Most Valuable Player, and Desiree Serrano Pitcher of the Year. Four players were also awarded positions on TSC's All-Star team: Amber Jackson, Desiree Serrano, Sarah Pauly and Oli Keohohou. Rookie pitching phenom Monica Abbott, MVP of the 2007 NPF Championship Series, was a latecomer to the league last season and therefore lost out to teammates Serrano and Pauly.
The Akron Racers won four awards, as Kristen Butler, Norelle Dickson and Veronica Wootson were all named to the All-Star team, and Jamee Juarez received an All-Star Honorable Mention.
Besides the 2007 Force, the New England Riptide and Rockford Thunder brought home three awards apiece. Eileen Canney of the Riptide was named Pitcher of the Year Runner-up and was selected to the All-Star team, along with teammate Shanel Scott. And Cat Osterman of the Thunder was named Most Valuable Player Runner-up, in addition to being selected for the All-Star team along with teammate Wong.
The Chicago Bandits claimed two selections to the All-Star team. They were Jennie Finch and Jessica Sallinger.
