Philadelphia Force News Release

Lowell, MA- The Philadelphia Force fell to the New England Riptide 4-1 on Friday night. The Riptide have taken the first three games of the four-game series thus far. Danielle Henderson (3-1) went to the distance to pick up the win.

Trailing 1-0 in the second inning, the Force (6-9) knotted up the score. With one out, first baseman Kellie Wilkerson singled. She moved up to second on a designated player Jenna Hall ground out. The next batter, right fielder Trena Peel, grounded a hard hit ball that Riptide second baseball Carri Leto-Martin was unable to come up with. Wilkerson scored as a result of the two-out error.

The Riptide started the scoring in the first inning off starting pitcher Meagan Hennessy (1-1). A one-out double, and two walks loaded the bases for the Riptide (12-7). With left fielder Shanel Scott the runner at third, center fielder Lisa Modglin lofted a pop up down the left field line and in foul territory. Force shortstop Chelsea Spencer hustled to make the catch, but Scott alertly tagged up to score on the sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Riptide would take the lead for good. A walk and three consecutive singles would give the Riptide a 2-1 lead. The third run would come on a deep sacrifice fly to center off the bat of designated player Garland Cooper.

Hennessy went two-plus innings for the Force and was replaced with Margo Pruis, who was sharp in the circle. Pruis inherited runners on first and second and no one out in the third. The first batter she faced, Jackie Pasquerella, singled to load the bases, but then Pruis pitched out of the inning in which the Riptide did add one more run on a sacrifice fly by Alex Sutton.

The hit to Pasquerella would be the only base runner that Pruis would allow in her four innings of work. She faced 13 batters and retired the last 12, striking out four along the way.

Wilkerson led the Force offense with two hits in three at-bats. She raised her average to .389 on the season. Third baseman Clare Burnum and Hall also had base hits for the Force.

The Force and Riptide finish off the series at Martin Softball Field Saturday night with first pitch at 7:05. Two Cal-Berkeley alumnae, Jocelyn Forest for the Riptide and Kristina Thorson for the Force, are the expected starters.
