Philadelphia Force News Release
Oklahoma City, Okla.- The Amateur Softball Association, which is the governing body of softball in the United States, have released the names of the three finalists for the 2008 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award, and Philadelphia Force draft pick, Megan Gibson, is one of those names. The Texas A&M standout and senior was selected number two overall by the Force in February's NPF draft.
Gibson and her Aggies eliminated Stanford University this past weekend in NCAA Super Regionals action. Texas A&M now moves on to the 8-team Women's College World Series to be held in Oklahoma City starting on Thursday, May 29. The Aggies will open with Virginia Tech at 3 p.m. eastern.
The pitcher/first baseman Gibson carries a 38-1 pitching record into this year's World Series. She has started 39 games for the Aggies and has 37 complete games. The Big 12 Pitcher of the Year has pitched 264 innings and recorded 315 strikeouts to support her 0.98 ERA. In her collegiate career, Gibson has posted 85 victories and pitched 678 innings.
Gibson was also named the Big 12 Player of the Year, which is the first time the same athlete would both awards in the same year. At the plate, she has produced, thus far, a .345 batting average and team-highs in home runs with 13 and RBIs with 48. Gibson, a career .363 hitting, has been in the starting lineup for the all 229 games played by the Aggies over the last four years.
Joining Gibson as finalist are Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher, a pitcher who was drafted third overall by the Akron Racers, and Tennessee's infielder Tonya Callahan, who was drafted by the Rockford Thunder in the third round of the NPF draft. The winner of the 7th annual award will be announced on Tuesday, May 27.
