Toronto Phantoms News Release
Toronto, Ontario: The Toronto Phantoms Arena Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of free agent quarterback Rickey Foggie. Foggie has 6 years of experience as a starting quarterback in the Arena Football League and has spent 15 years in professional football. Foggie began the 2002 campaign with the Detroit Fury. He threw 16 TD passes and just 3 interceptions in the first 4 games, but was released on May 13th with the club's record sitting at 1-3. In 2001, Foggie posted career highs with the now-defunct Florida Bobcats passing for 3619 yards and 69 touchdowns. He authored perhaps the finest post-season performance in league history in a 1998 quarterfinal win over Albany (August 8th, 1998). Foggie, at the time a member of the New Jersey Red Dogs, set league records that still stand with 59 attempts, 39 completions, 446 passing yards and 9 TD passes. He entered the league completing 226 passes for Minnesota in 1996 â at the time, second only among all-time AFL rookies to former AFL star Kurt Warner. Foggie joined the AFL after a distinguished playing career in the Canadian Football League with B.C., Toronto, Edmonton, Memphis and Hamilton. He is perhaps best known for the time he spent with the Toronto Argonauts between 1990 and 1992. Foggie was the Argos leading rusher and passer in 1991 as the team posted the league's best regular season record and went to on to capture the Grey Cup championship. In spite of playing just 3 seasons in Toronto, Foggie stills holds a place in the team's record book ranking in the top five in Argonauts history with 60 passing touchdowns (4th) and 8,291 career passing yards (5th). His 7 TD passes against archrival Hamilton (9/29/90) remains a club high for a single game. Mark Stoute, Toronto's Head Coach & General Manager, says, "We are so happy to add a veteran and a proven winner like Rickey to our football team. We have got to considerate ourselves truly fortunate to be able to pick up a player of his caliber at this point so late in our regular season." Says Foggie, "This is great to return to a city where I have so many happy memories and to join a championship contender with so many talented receivers to throw the ball to." The Phantoms had room on the team's roster to sign the veteran QB, after placing OL/DL Connell Spain on the injured reserve list. Spain suffered a fracture in his knee socket in Toronto's last game, a loss to Buffalo. The veteran lineman will miss the remainder of the season. Foggie will travel with the Phantoms to Florida tomorrow morning for Friday night's game with the Orlando Predators (7:30 PM kickoff, TD Waterhouse Centre). His first appearance in Air Canada Centre as a member of the Phantoms will come next Thursday, June 27th when Toronto plays host to the Los Angeles Avengers (7:00 PM kickoff). Tickets for that game are on sale and can be purchased by calling (416) 341-1234 or by logging on to www.torontophantoms.com.
