Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL-The Kansas City T-Bones finished off a sweep of the Schaumburg Flyers Sunday with a 10-4 victory in front of 4,970 fans at Alexian Field.

For the third game in a row, the T-Bones got on the board in the top of the first. After Flyers starter Carmen Pignatiello retired the first two T-Bones, Craig Jacobs crushed a homer to right.

The Flyers answered back in their half of the first to tie the game at one. Travis Ezi started things with a single. He advanced to third when Jose Valdez extended his hit streak to eleven games with a single, his first of three hits on the day. Then Vince Harrison, who got the start at first in the wake of Jason Colson being released, hit a deep sacrifice fly to right to score Ezi and get the Flyers on the board.

But that was as close as the Flyers would get as Pignatiello gave up five runs in the top of the third. A sure double-play grounder by Jacob Blackwood got through the legs of 2B Stephen Yoo with no one out. Jeff Dunbar, back from a hamstring injury, then misplayed a ball hit by Anthony Fasano in left field, plating two. Singles by Jacobs and Craig Hurba added to the total for Kansas City.

The Flyers got another run in the bottom half of the fourth. Victor Ferrante, who had a monster homestand, cranked a solo home run over the center field wall, his fifth of the season.

But the T-Bones added three more in the top of the fifth, again with the long ball. Shortstop Mark Minicozzi hit a two-out, three-run homer to deep left field to extend the lead to 10-2.

After the fourth, Pignatiello settled down and did not allow a hit in his final two innings. Relievers Jim Popp and Cephas Howard continued the trend, not allowing hits in the eighth and ninth innings respectively.

The Flyers' newest acquisition, catcher Craig Maddox, got his first start today and made it worthwhile with a two-run home run to center field in the bottom of the ninth, his first in a Flyers uniform.

The Flyers fall to 19-19 on the season and slip to third place in the Northern League for the first time since May 31st. The T-Bones have won five of six games and improved to 18-20.

Pignatiello gets the loss giving up ten runs, six earned, putting his record at 3-3 on the season. Ryan Knippschild improves to 2-1 on the season as he pitched seven strong for the T-Bones.
