Schaumburg Flyers News Release

JOLIET - Travis Ezi robbed Brad Correll of a home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth and caught a Tydus Meadows fly ball with his back to the wall to end the game and secure a 5-4 win Friday at Silver Cross Field.

After the Flyers spoiled scoring opportunities in the first and second with double play balls, Joliet got on the board in the second. Issac Omura lofted a bases loaded sacrifice fly, scoring Tydus Meadows who had led off the inning with a single. Schaumburg answered back with a run in the top of the third as Jeff Dunbar scampered home on a wild pitch from JackHammers starter Ryan Gehring. The Hammers would retake the lead in the bottom of the third when Wally Backman Jr. scored Brad Correll with a two-out broken-bat single.

Travis Brown highlighted a three run fourth for the Flyers, following a Dunbar RBI single with a two-out triple down the right field line, putting the Flyers in front for the first time at 4-2. The JackHammers added another run in the bottom half of the inning when Omura scored on a double-play ball, cutting the Schaumburg lead to 4-3.

The Flyers got an insurance run in the seventh when Jose Valdez scored Brown on a groundout. Valdez was unable to record a hit, going 0-5 and seeing his hit streak end at 15 games.

Joliet got one back off of Cephas Howard in the eighth when Phil Avlas came home on a fielder's choice grounder from Adam Klein, bringing the game to its final. Howard stayed on in the dramatic ninth to record a two-inning save (2).

Brown was the offensive star for Schaumburg, going 4-4 with a triple and a run scored. Craig Maddox extended his hit streak to 10 games, going 2-4 with a run. Kevin Rios and Backman Jr. both recorded two hits for the JackHammers.

Flyers starter Dustin Glant got the win (5-2), scattering seven hits over seven innings while allowing three runs. Gehring (3-4) is charged with the loss, allowing five runs on nine hits over seven innings.

LHP Alain Quijano (2-1, 3.77) will take the mound for the Flyers against Joliet's RHP Jason Richardson (1-7, 6.53) tomorrow with the first pitch being tossed at 7:05.
