Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL- Andy McCauley, the first-year manager of the Schaumburg Flyers, will return to his position for the 2004 season. McCauley has been re-hired by club officials as the Flyers enter the final week of the regular season with a Northern League playoff spot in their sights. Schaumburg currently holds a 45-38 record and a commanding lead in the race for a potential wild card playoff berth. The Flyers have a new club record for wins with six regular season games still remaining on the schedule.

"I'm really excited to be coming back to Schaumburg after the success we've had on the field this year," said McCauley. "It's been a very fun season and I look forward to continuing to work with Rich Ehrenreich, Rick Rungaitis and the rest of the front office staff."

McCauley, 34, has led the Flyers to their best season since 1999 when the franchise made its only playoff appearance to date, winning two division halves in the club's inaugural season. Several team and individual milestones have been established over the course of the summer including new records for wins, home wins (25) and most Northern League All-Stars (3). Two Flyer players have advanced to major league organizations this season (RHP Evan Fahrner: Chicago Cubs, IF Rudy Gomez: Anaheim). Schaumburg has also played in front of the three largest single-game crowds in franchise history in 2003, setting a new record on July 3 when 7,728 fans packed Alexian Field for a Flyers-Winnipeg game.

Originally hired on December 12, 2002, Andy McCauley is the fourth manager in franchise history. If the 2003 team advances to the postseason, McCauley will have his fourth playoff team in his five full seasons as an independent league manager. In 1999, he led the London (ON) Werewolves to a Frontier League title and won Manager of the Year honors in the process.

A Northern League wild card spot will be available if Fargo-Moorhead wins both halves in the West Division. The F-M RedHawks are on the verge of wrapping up their division race as they lead Kansas City by five games with just six games to go for both clubs. Kansas City is 5.5 games behind wild card leader Schaumburg. The Flyers could secure a playoff spot as early as tonight, depending on results in other Northern League cities. Schaumburg will host St. Paul tonight at 7:05 PM.
