Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL- The Flyers lost their rubber-match with St. Paul on Sunday night by a final of 5-2 at Alexian Field, dropping two-of-three. The loss gave Schaumburg (1-2, 26-21) their first losing series since June 8 when they were swept in St. Paul. Coming into this weekend, the team had played in nine straight series without taking on a losing record.
Flyer starter Jeff Keppen was hit hard in the second inning. Aaron Fera led off the frame with a single up the middle and went to second when Ryan Kane drew a walk. After Scott McKee hit a sharp single to left to load the bases, Keppen (4-5) coaxed Jeff Brooks to ground into a 6-3 double play, scoring Fera from third. Joe Shallenberger stepped to the plate and smashed a run-scoring double to the gap in left-center, scoring Kane. With two outs and a man at second, Mike Byas drew a walk and came around to score on Justin Hall's two-RBI triple.
The Saints (2-1, 32-16) had All-Star Kevin Foster on the hill and the former Cub showed some major league talent. Foster (8-1) allowed only one run during his seven innings on the mound, an infield single by his ex-Cub teammate Brant Brown that scored Kirk Pierce in the fourth. The St. Paul pitcher allowed only five Flyer hits on the night and struck out seven while walking two. Chris Chavez picked up his 15th save of the season by throwing a perfect ninth inning.
The Flyers will try to snap their two-game losing streak tomorrow in Joliet. The game will be the first of a four-game set with the JackHammers. The Flyers will send Russ Morgan (1-0) to the hill. The JackHammers will counter with Mike Zipser (2-6) who went 0-4 against the Flyers in 2003 while pitching for Lincoln.
NOTES: Sunday's loss marked the first time this season that the Flyers lost back-to-back games at home ... it was also the first time the team had lost back-to-back games since June 8-9 ... Kirk Pierce's triple in the fourth inning was his first of the season and only the fifth of his nine-year professional career.
