Florida Falls Victim to Long Ball in Series Opener

July 16, 2018 - Florida State League (FSL) - Florida Fire Frogs News Release

DUNEDIN, Fla. - The Florida Fire Frogs and Dunedin Blue Jays played a game of "long ball" on Monday night, with Florida coming out on the losing end of a 5-2 score at Dunedin Stadium. The three home runs allowed by the Fire Frogs' pitching staff in the series opener tied a season high.

Jeremy Walker surrendered the first shot in the second inning, having a 3-2 pitch lifted over the wall in right off the bat of Kacy Clemens for a two-run round tripper. Walker did not allow another run to cross the plate through his remaining three innings, scattering four hits while walking two and striking out a pair in the no-decision.

Florida (12-13, 41-50) knotted the game at two with a two-out, two-run shot from Isranel Wilson (1x4, R, HR, 2 RBI) against Patrick Murphy (7-4) in the fifth inning, but that wold be the only damage done against the opposing starting pitcher from the Atlanta Braves' High-A affiliate.

Troy Bacon (1-1) took the loss by suffering a solo blast by Kevin Smith to lead off the sixth. The right-handed reliever allowed a two-run homer to David Jacob two batters later to put the visitors in a three-run deficit.

The Fire Frogs had a chance to chip away with the bases loaded and just one out in the eighth, but Jackson McClelland (SV, 7) struck out Brett Cumberland (0x4) and retired Braxton Davidson (0x4) on a groundout to escape the jam.

Florida will attempt to tie the series at a game each in the middle match of the three-game set from Dunedin Stadium on Tuesday morning. LHP Tucker Davidson (6-6, 3.92) takes the mound for the Fire Frogs against LHP Zach Logue (5-2, 3.46). First pitch is schedule for 11 a.m., with coverage starting at 10:45 a.m. on the Florida Fire Frogs Broadcasting Network.
