Boise, Idaho â The Continental Basketball Association announced today that Flint (Mich.) Fuze forward Ira Newble has been called up by the NBA's Atlanta Hawks. The call-up is the fourth of the 2001-02 CBA season.
Newble, a 6-7 University of Miami of Ohio ('97) product, began the season in Atlanta's training camp before being released. He averaged 21.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.9 assists in 15 games with Flint. He posted 19 or more points in 10 games, including a 27 point, 11 rebound performance in his December 1st Fuze debut.
"We always knew that Ira was a very skilful player and it was just a matter of time before he was called up. He's a very athletic, solid basketball player and on top of that he's a genuine guy. All he needed was time to market and display what he can do on the basketball court. He's been in the NBA and he demonstrated here in Flint that he's a professional," said Fuze Head Coach Jeff Grayer. "This is an exciting time for the franchiseâ to first have Jermaine Jackson called up and now Ira. We're proud of the things we're doing in our community and for the game of basketball."
Hawks General Manager Pete Babcock said the team developed a good relationship with Newble during training camp. "He came close to making our team at that time. We really value his defensive capabilities at the two and the three and that's what we're looking for. It was a perfect fit."
Newble played for the CBA's Idaho Stampede from 1997-2000 and spent the entire 2000-01 season with the NBA's San Antonio Spurs, where he saw action in 27 games. He will fill the roster spot vacated by CBA veteran Emanuel Davis, who was placed on the injured reserve list.
