Flash Forward Marta Captures Third Consecutive Puma Golden Boot Award
August 15, 2011 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) News Release
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (August 15, 2011) - Western New York Flash forward Marta helped her team to the Regular Season Championship title, scoring her tenth goal of the season in a 2-0 victory over the Atlanta Beat on Sunday, en route to earning her third consecutive PUMA Golden Boot award. The Brazilian soccer star edged out fellow Flash forward Christine Sinclair for the award, in the tie breaker having a greater production rate based on goals per game average.
Marta, who appeared in 14 games for Western New York, turned it on down the stretch scoring five goals in the Flash's last three games of the regular season, matching her PUMA Golden Boot-winning total from her inaugural season campaign in 2009.
Flash teammate Christine Sinclair, who assisted Marta's title clinching 10th goal, matched her own WPS career-high goal total of 10. Philadelphia's Tasha Kai and magicJack's player-coach Abby Wambach also put together strong 2011 campaigns, scoring nine goals each, but falling one short of title consideration.
The 2011 PUMA Golden Boot Winner has proven to be one of the most productive offensive forces in WPS, also ranking among the top four on the WPS leader board in assists with five.
The five-time and reigning FIFA World Player of the Year has led WPS in the awards category since the league's inaugural season, having previously captured both the Michelle Akers Award (MVP), PUMA Golden Boot while also being named a WPS All-Star in her first two seasons (2009, 2010) in WPS.
Marta represented her home country of Brazil in the 2011 Women's World Cup where she helped her team to a quarterfinal appearance. Her goal scoring prowess earned her the Silver Ball as the tournament's second leading goal scorer, having scored four goals in four games for the Samba Queens of Brazil.
Marta now looks to add to her overall goal total on Saturday, August 27 as the Regular Season Champion Western New York Flash host the WPS Championship game at Sahlen's Stadium in Rochester.
