Fire Get Blown Out On Historic Night

April 12, 2014 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) - Georgia Fire News Release

COLUMBUS, GA (April 11, 2014) - The Georgia Fire (1-1) of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) were blown out 71-34 on Friday by in-conference foe the Columbus Lions (2-1) on a night that honored one of the game's elite defenders.

Already a four-time defensive player of the year recipient, Lions defensive back Damian "The Nighthawk" Daniels entered this season with one immediate goal, become indoor/arena football's all-time interceptions leader. Daniels entered the season just three shy of breaking the record, previously held by Kenny McIntyre, and just two shy entering Friday night's contest versus the Fire.

"Nighthawk" and company would only have to wait two quarters for history to be made as Daniels picked up two Chris Mitchell passes in the 2nd Quarter with the historic second interception coming in the waning moments of the half. Career interception number 99 vaults Damian into the vaults as one of the game's all-time defender.

Coming off an impressive opening game victory over Alabama, it was a different story for the Fire on Friday night. Due to a scheduling conflict, starting quarterback Cecil Lester was unable to dress leaving back-up QB Chris Mitchell as Friday night's starter. Mitchell and company struggled to capitalize off the momentum from last week's win completing just 26 of 47 passes for 261 yards with four touchdowns and three interceptions.

The lone Georgia highlight of the night came from WR Johnny Lester who made public headlines on ESPN's Sportscenter Top Ten Plays for his acrobatic 21-yard touchdown leaping grab over the wall late in the 2nd quarter. Lester finished the contest with six receptions for 67 yards and two touchdowns.

Georgia will get the week off before aiming at redemption on Saturday April 26th when they return to Columbus for a rematch while Columbus will prep for a trip up north against the idle Trenton Freedom (1-1) next Saturday.
