Seven years, seven titles... equals unprecedented success
With Saturday night's 4-1 win against the Santa Fe Roadrunners, the Texas Tornado added to their list of historic North American Hockey League accomplishments. For the 7th consecutive season, the Texas Tornado has won an NAHL Division Regular Season title. The seven consecutive titles tie the original NAHL record set by the Paddock Pools Saints, who won their division seven years in a row from 1976-1983. Clinching the division also means that the Tornado will have home ice advantage throughout the 2006 NAHL Playoffs. "This success is a testament to the strong and committed ownership throughout the years, our incredible fans, and all of the Texas Tornado players, past and present," said Tornado Head Coach and General Manager Tony Curtale, who has been at the helm for all seven titles. The Texas Tornado now will begin their quest for a third straight Robertson Cup Championship. Last season, the Texas Tornado became only the 2nd team in United States junior hockey history to win Back-to-Back National Championships. Overall, the Tornado has won three Robertson Cup Championships (2001, 2004, 2005), and is one of only three teams in the 30-year history of the NAHL to have won three or more Robertson Cup titles (Paddock Pools Saints and Compuware Ambassadors). The 2006 NAHL Robertson Cup Tournament will be played in Boardman, Ohio, May 10-13, and hosted by the Mahoning Valley Phantoms of the NAHL North Division, who will receive an automatic bid to the tournament. Joining the Phantoms for the five-team tournament will be the four winners in each of the 2006 NAHL Divisional playoff series. The Tornado finished the 2005-06 regular season with 42 wins, 12 losses, and 4 overtime/shootout losses in 58 regular season games. The 42 wins equal the second most in franchise history, tying the 1999-2000 Tornado team who also had 42 wins, which set a NAHL expansion team record. The 2003-2004 Texas Tornado, which won the franchise's first-ever National Championship, still holds the NAHL record for wins in a season with 48. To date, the Tornado has an overall regular season record of 295 wins, 81 losses and 18 ties, which averages over a 77% winning percentage throughout their seven-year history... an unprecedented mark in junior hockey in the United States.
