Eleven Teams to Compete in 2006 NLL Season
June 3, 2005 - National Lacrosse League (NLL) News Release
The National Lacrosse League has announced the league will consist of eleven teams for the 2006 season. The eleven-team league will include expansion teams in Edmonton, Alberta and Portland, Oregon. The Anaheim Storm lacrosse club has suspended operations, and will not play during the 2006 season. Applications for expansion teams in the New York and New England markets will remain under consideration as expansion candidates for the 2007 season.
The league consisted of ten teams during the 2005 season, which concluded in May. The season ended on May 14th with the Edge NLL Championship Game, played in front of a league-record sellout crowd of 19,432 at the Air Canada Centre at Toronto. A national audience in the US and Canada watched the championship game live on NBC and the Score.
"We finished our season on a very positive note, and we're pleased to be increasing our number of teams (from ten to eleven) for the 2006 season", said NLL Commissioner Jim Jennings. "Our expansion for the 2006 season is now complete. We will continue to explore expansion possibilities for the 2007 season and beyond."
The team divisional format for the 2006 season will be determined at a later date. A dispersal draft of Anaheim Storm players will also be held at a later date.
