El Paso Buzzards get new ownership

WPHL Press Release

The Western Professional Hockey League has held a press conference at the El Paso County Coliseum to introduce West Texas Hockey Management, Inc. as the new ownership of the El Paso Buzzards, a charter member of the WPHL.

The Buzzards have played a vital role in the growth and development of the Western Professional Hockey League, capturing President's Cup Championships in both the ‘96/'97 and ‘97/'98 seasons under then coach Todd Brost. In their four seasons of play, the Buzzards have qualified for post-season action each year, and look to continue the trend in the WPHL's 5th anniversary season, under new Head Coach Trent Eigner, a former Buzzards defenseman.

West Texas Hockey Management Inc. has reached an agreement in principle with Tejano Sports Inc. to assume control of the Buzzards' franchise, and has immediately named Bill Davidson President. Davidson will direct and oversee the day-to-day operation of the Buzzards. "I welcome the opportunity to develop and expand on the tremendous hockey tradition that exists here in the El Paso area, and look forward to building on a great foundation," said Davidson.

The WPHL opens its 5th season of play on Thursday, October 12th, with games in both Corpus Christi (vs the Fort Worth Brahmas) and Tupelo (vs Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs). The Buzzards' first game is scheduled for Friday, October13th, when they host the expansion Tucson Scorch in Tucson's first ever franchise game. The Buzzards play their first road game of the season just two days later, visiting the Lubbock Cotton Kings on Sunday, October 15th. The Buzzards join Tucson, San Angelo New Mexico, Odessa, Lubbock and Amarillo in the WPHL's Western Division, while Austin, Bossier-Shreveport, Central Texas, Corpus Christi, Fort Worth, Lake Charles, Monroe and Tupelo will battle it out for the Eastern Division title.

Brad Treliving, WPHL President, was on hand for the announcement, noting that he was very pleased to officially welcome the Buzzards' new ownership. "We are very happy to add West Texas Hockey Management to the WPHL family, and look forward to the Buzzards soaring to greater heights in the upcoming seasons."
