Edmonton's Dennis Henke Named PCL Executive of the Year
October 26, 2004 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo., â The Pacific Coast League has named Edmonton Trappers Assistant General Manager Dennis Henke its Executive of the Year for the 2004 season, an honor annually awarded by PCL owners and general managers to the League executive whose team exemplifies overall excellence in the baseball industry.
This year, Henke helped the team draw more than 250,000 fans for the 14th straight season and persevered through the club's last campaign in Edmonton while also undergoing treatment to overcome cancer.
Henke joined the Trappers prior to the 1983 season, just the team's third in Edmonton, and served in nearly every capacity within the organization, from season ticket sales to stadium operations, before ascending to the position of Assistant General Manager. During his 22-year tenure with the Trappers, Henke presided over the completion of TELUS Field in 1995, enjoyed four League championships, witnessed seven PCL playoff appearances, and welcomed the franchise's 7,000,000th fan. His illness caused him to miss a Trappers game for the just the second time since 1983.
"While Dennis's accomplishments this past year certainly warrant his selection for this award, it should be noted the overall admiration in which he is held by his peers on the basis of years and years of dedication and outstanding performance," said Pacific Coast League President Branch B. Rickey.
"The kindness and attention that he has lavished upon players, both home and away, as well as the respect he has shown for umpires, other team officials, his own staff, followers of the Trappers, and even this League President, is truly remarkable. He's an outstanding representative for professional baseball at any level and a tremendous person."
The Alberta native will accept the prestigious award at Baseball's Winter Meetings in Anaheim, California this December. He is the second member of the Trappers front office to earn PCL Executive of the Year since the award was established in 1974, joining former Edmonton General Manager Mel Kowalchuk, who won in 1995.
