Edinburg blanks Wings in nightcap

HARLINGEN, Texas - Nick Aranda snapped a scoreless duel with an RBI double in the sixth inning, sparking the Edinburg Coyotes to a 4-0 victory over the Harlingen WhiteWings on Saturday night in the Texas Winter League.

Harlingen starter Brian Fulcher was dominant through five innings, taking a one-hit shutout into the sixth, and the only hit was a soft opposite field single. But the Coyotes finally got to him in the sixth and Fulcher (0-1) was the tough-luck loser.

Charlie Ibarra singled off the glove of a diving third baseman Bryan Sabatella. One batter later, Juan Segaviano walked, then Aranda doubled to right center for the first run.

Later in the inning, with reliever Julian Williams pitching, second baseman Kerry Reeves bobbled a potential double-play grounder. That allowed a second run to score, kept the inning alive, and a third run scored on a wild pitch.

Edinburg starter Jorge Verela was in four jams in four innings, but escaped all of them with no runs scored. Bric Steed (1-0) pitched shutout ball the final three innings for the victory, giving up two hits and whiffing three.

The Wings wasted numerous scoring opportunities. They stranded nine runners in the seven inning game, hit into a double play in the third inning, and also had a runner thrown out at the plate in the fourth inning on an attempted delayed double steal. Sabatella had a pair of doubles, and one of five stolen bases by Harlingen.

Only two games were played Saturday due to field conditions early in the day. The middle game of the three, which was a makeup game from Monday, was postponded again. No makeup date has been scheduled. The league is off Sunday, but returns with double headers at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
