Early season random thoughts on the IBL
April 2, 2007 - International Basketball League (IBL) News Release
-Marysville is 6-0 and is playing out of this world! They have shot off to a fantastic start. Ok, no more bad "meteor" puns. Can they keep this pace up and take the title away from Elkhart? Estaban Weaver (6'4''-G, college: Central State) is averaging 33 points a game and his sidekick Michael Brownlee in not far behind at 26 points a game. Are they the IBL's version of Michael and Scottie?
-The Central Oregon Hotshots have signed Oregon high school coaching legends Dick and Phil Gray to lead the team. The Gray's are a perfect match for the IBL and the Hotshots. The IBL encourages an up tempo style of play, and the Gray's have been preaching this style at the high school level for years and years. The Hotshot players and scorekeeper will get quite a workout this season!
-Is Cedric Ceballos (6'7''-F-69, agency: Edge Sports, college: Cal.St. Fullerton) really going to lace up the sneakers for the Phoenix Flame? It doesn't seem that long ago I was watching him work the baseline for easy points with the Phoenix Suns. I hope Ced has some gas left in the tank.
-I hope the Chico Force play like they did last season. I didn't see a team share the ball and move without the ball better than Chico. They didn't have the raw talent like some other IBL teams but they played very smart basketball. Yes, I am old school.
-The Grand Rapids Flight signed 7-9 giant Ming Ming Sun (7'9''-C-83, agency: Passing Lane). My first thought was, "This has to be nothing more than a ploy to put butts in the seats". The IBL sresses up temp, fast beak, basketball. The 7-9 Ming is not exactly fleet of foot. After four games, his high scoring game is 14 points. I am not sure how much he can help the Flight on the court. I am sure he can help them by putting people in the stands. I guess in the minors, that's enough.
-If you want to see a picture perfect jump shot, please watch Vancouver Volcanoes guard Brad Lechtenberg (6'2''-G-81, college: San Diego). High school and middle schol coaches should have their players watch him shoot. He was a three point specialist at University of San Diego and he has carried that over to the IBL. In the dictionary under, "zone buster" there is a picture of Brad Lechtenberg.
-These are a few of my early season random thoughts on the International Basketball League. I will write more of my thoughts every week or two. I hope you enjoy it! If you would like to send me feedback good or bad, shoot me an email at sportsmammal@nwlink.com
