Amarillo, TX 2/17/09 - As af2 teams everywhere begin preparation for the upcoming 2009 season, the Amarillo Dusters and Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz have agreed to schedule a preseason game between the two teams on March 16.
The game will be played at the Amarillo Civic Center, and will serve for coaches of both teams to get a better feel for their squads in 2009.
"Having the opportunity to play Oklahoma City in preseason is exciting," said first-year Dusters Head Coach Ben Bennett. "After a week of beating up on ourselves, it will be important to see how we stack up against a team that looks pretty strong heading into this season."
"Our scrimmage with the Dusters will be a critical point in our training camp schedule," Yard Dawgz Head Coach Sparky McEwen elaborated. "At that point, we will be evaluating our roster to make our final cuts before the season opener."
The game will start at 7:00 PM Central Time, with the teams playing four 15-minute quarters. Rules will be similar to a regular season arenafootball2 game, as players vie to solidify positions on both rosters. Ticket prices will be $5 for general admission seats, as a way to celebrate the Dusters' fifth year of football in the Texas Panhandle.
"We are excited to make the trip to Amarillo on March 16th to scrimmage the Dusters," Christie Cook, General Manager of the Yard Dawgz, said Monday. "The scrimmage will allow our fans, who can make the short trip to Amarillo, the chance to get a sneak peek of what we have in store for the 2009 season."
Joe Morgado, the General Manager of the Dusters, agreed on the importance of the game. "This pre-season game is a great way to kick off our fifth season here in Amarillo. It is crucial for Coach Bennett to be able to assess talent in a game situation, and this contest against a worthy opponent will provide him with an opportunity to do just that."
The scrimmage between the two division rivals is not the only time the two squads will face each other during the upcoming af2 schedule. Oklahoma City will travel to Amarillo to play on Friday, March 27, kicking off the season for both teams. Under one month later (April 25), Amarillo will take on the Yard Dawgz at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City to complete the season series.
