Amarillo Venom News Release
Amarillo, TX 9/17/08 - Randy Sanders, who owns the Amarillo Gorillas hockey club, took over the majority ownership reigns of Amarillo's only professional football team Wednesday. At a press conference inside the Amarillo Civic Center, Sanders made the official announcement alongside staff members of both the Dusters and Gorillas.
"The opportunity for an arenafootball2 team to succeed in the Texas Panhandle is great," said Sanders. "We hope to pool together resources from both the teams in a synergistic effort to bring a new era of family entertainment to the Amarillo area."
Sanders took over ownership of the Gorillas in April of 2008, after a consortium of local owners had decided to sell the team. With the Dusters' success on the field during the 2008 af2 season, he hopes both franchises will develop a presence in the Amarillo community.
"The cross-marketing opportunities between the two teams are fantastic," Sanders continued. "By improving the level of entertainment available to Amarillo residents, we feel that we can provide a quality product for our fans and corporate partners in the future."
"Having Randy assume control of the Dusters is a positive step for the af2 in that it ensures us that one of our valuable league members will continue to call Amarillo its home for years to come," said af2 President Jerry Kurz. "The Dusters have endeared themselves to the Texas Panhandle community since joining the league in 2005 thanks to a commitment to excellence both on and off the football field. We anticipate a smooth transition and a bright future ahead for the franchise."
The operations for the two teams will not change, as both squads will retain their front office structure. However, beginning immediately, the Dusters will move front office locations to 901 S. Buchanan, joining the Gorillas at that location.
THE AMARILLO DUSTERS are a member of the 30-team arenafootball2 league. Their front office is now located at 901 S. Buchanan in downtown Amarillo. Season ticket packages for 2009 are available by calling (806) 350-PASS (7277), and start at just $96 a seat.
