Dayton Dragons News Release
DAYTON, OH - The first sign that baseball season is just around the corner is the start of spring training. The second, at least in the Miami Valley, is the Dayton Daily News / Dayton Dragons National Anthem Tryouts at the Mall at Fairfield Commons and the Dayton Mall. Auditions for 2008 National Anthem performers will be Saturday, March 1st at the Mall at Fairfield Commons from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, March 2nd at the Dayton Mall from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The winners will perform the national anthem at Dragons games throughout the season, with the grand prize winner performing at Opening Day 2008 as the Dragons host the Fort Wayne Wizards at Fifth Third Field on Monday, April 7th at 7 p.m.
"The national anthem tryouts mean that Opening Day is right around the corner," said Dragons President Robert Murphy. "This event showcases some of the most talented people in the Miami Valley and really serves as a great kickoff to the start of what will be another great baseball season at Fifth Third Field."
"We're pleased to offer the community the forum to showcase what the anthem means to them," said Kathy Kralovic, Vice President, Marketing, Cox Ohio Publishing.
Due to the overwhelming turnout in past years, the competition is primarily open to those contestants who have pre-registered. Potential singers and musicians who were not able to register will still have a chance to audition. Each day there will be a standby line available on a first-come, first-served basis for anyone who does not have a spot. At any point if the tryouts run ahead of schedule or a performer does not show, those in the standby line will be chosen to fill the opening. Standby contestants are encouraged to arrive early.
A panel of local citizens including Dayton Daily News columnists and editors, city officials and community leaders will be judging the event. The panel will make its selections based on voice quality, creative style, stage presence and appearance.
