Dominant SaberCats Still No. 1 in AFL Power Rankings
August 3, 2015 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release
LAS VEGAS - On the heels of holding the three-time defending ArenaBowl champion Arizona Rattlers (13-4) to their lowest point total in the Kevin Guy era, the San Jose SaberCats (16-1) solidified their standing as the top-ranked team in the latest AFL Power Rankings. The SaberCats will look to enter the postseason on a high note as they travel to Anaheim for a matchup with the only team to beat San Jose this season, the LA KISS (4-13). Kickoff is set for 10:00 p.m. ET Saturday night on ESPN3.
The No. 2-ranked Philadelphia Soul (14-3) rolled past the New Orleans VooDoo (3-13-1), 61-28, in Week 19. The top seed in the American Conference will have a tune-up game against their AFL Quarterfinal opponents, the Cleveland Gladiators (8-9), in the regular season finale before kicking it into high gear for the playoffs. The first of back-to-back meetings between the East Division rivals is set to go live at 7:00 p.m. ET Saturday on ESPN3.
After a second lopsided defeat at the hands of their greatest rivals last weekend, the Arizona Rattlers will look to take out their frustrations on the playoff-hopeful Portland Thunder (5-12) in Week 20. The Thunder can clinch their second straight trip to the postseason with a win and a Las Vegas Outlaws loss; however, Portland has yet to crack the code when it comes to the Rattlers, having come up short in all six previous contests - including last year's opening round playoff game - against Arizona. Kickoff for Saturday's game is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.
Despite a 14-point loss to the newly crowned South Division champions in Week 19, the Jacksonville Sharks (9-8) still managed to edge the Orlando Predators (11-6) for fourth-place in the latest AFL Power Rankings based on strength of schedule. The Preds and Sharks will be able to settle the debate once and for all on the field in two weeks when they square off one more time in the AFL Quarterfinals. In the meantime, Jacksonville will host the New Orleans VooDoo, while Orlando welcomes the Tampa Bay Storm (7-10) to town for one more "War on I-4" showdown in 2015. Both games are set for 7:00 p.m. ET Saturday on ESPN3.
The AFL Power Rankings are calculated on ArenaFootball.com using a scoring system based on winning percentage, strength of schedule, scoring percentage, and win-streak. This week's complete AFL Power Rankings are listed below.
