Dirt Dawgs Claw Back to Win 14-13 over Martha's Vineyard

Besides Towers, the Dirt Dawgs were paced offensively by Jack Gethings (Fairfield). Gethings went 3-for 6 at the plate, including driving in three runs. Eddie Santiago (Mitchell) was the stop gap that Wachusett needed, by going 3.1 innings, to give the Dirt Dawgs a chance to turn the tide of the contest.

Martha's Vineyard was lead by Troy Stefanski (UConn) who drove in three runs. On the mound Andrew Ferraro (Amherst) went 3.0 innings, while striking out four and yielded just two hits.

The Sharks jumped out the an early lead in the top of the first as Stefanski launched a two run homerun over the right field fence. Martha's Vineyard would expand their lead by plating five runs in the second and two more in the third. Wachusett came roaring back in the bottom half of the third as the Dirt Dawgs scored six times in the frame.

After both squads scored one run in their respective half of the fourth, Wachusett struck twice in the fifth when Bradley Wood (Northern IL) sent the Sharks offering over the center field fence to cut the deficit down to 10-9. In the top of the seventh, Martha's Vineyard put a three spot up in the inning making it 13-9 in the visitors favor.

With the Dirt Dawgs trailing by four runs in the bottom of the ninth, after the first three batter reached base from either a walk or hit by pitch, Gethings ripped a single to the outfield, plating a pair. Kyle Pangallo (SNHU) reached base on a single, scoring Christian Fedko (UConn) on the play to draw within one. The game-tying run would score when Jacob McFadden (U of Tampa) was hit with a pitch while the bases were loaded to tied the game up at 13-13.

After a scoreless tenth inning, the game went to a homerun derby to decide the game. The Sharks went first in the derby, with Jack Zagaja (New Haven) hitting two, Stefanski picked up a pair, and Philip Clarke (Vanderbilt) added one more homerun before time expired. Towers dug into the plate and mashed six towering homeruns to left field to clinch the win for the Dirt Dawgs.

Inside the Numbers

-In the new Future Collegiate Baseball League rules, if a game is tied after the 10th inning the game will go to a homerun derby. The First Round is a 3 minute round with two 30-second timeouts. The team with the most homeruns will win the game.

-After completing comeback from down 9-0, it is the largest margin to overcome in the six year history of the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs.

The Dirt Dawgs returns to action on Friday as they head to Bristol to take on the Blues for a doubleheader, starting at 4:30pm. Martha's Vineyard returns to the island tomorrow night as they host the Brockton Rox at 6:35pm.
