Detroit Tigers Sign Orange County Flyers Manager Phil Nevin to AA Post

(San Ramon, CA. December 15, 2009) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today Orange County Flyers Manager Phil Nevin has been signed by the Detroit Tigers to Manage their AA minor league team, the Erie Sea Wolves, in the Eastern League. He replaced former Sea Wolves Manager Tom Brookens who has moved up to the big leagues as the new first base coach for the Tigers.

Nevin, 38, played for the Tigers in 1995-97. Houston made Nevin the first player taken in the 1992 draft. He played with several clubs in a career that lasted 12 years. He hit 208 home runs and finished with a career average of.270. His major league career included stints with Houston, Anaheim, Chicago (NL), Minnesota, Texas, Detroit and San Diego. In 2001, he was an All-Star with the Padres. Phil broke into managing this past season as he guided the Flyers to a record of 37-39. Phil was the third manager in the OC Flyers history after Garry Templeton and Hall of Famer Gary Carter. The Flyers will now begin the search for a new Field Manager for 2010.

Nevin is the third GBL alumni manager this off-season to be signed to manage in the minor leagues. San Diego Surf Dawg skipper Terry Kennedy (2005 & 2006) has been tabbed by the Padres as their AAA skipper in Portland and Chico Outlaws manager Mark Parent (2005 - 2007) has just been announced as the Philadelphia Phillies High-A manager in Lakewood, NJ.
