Defensive Playmaker Rejoins the Force

WICHITA, Kan. - The Wichita Force has announced the re-signing of defensive back Dontra Matthews for 2017.
Matthews joined the Force in week 8 of the 2017 season and became a key contributor to the Force defense and championship run. In 7 games with the Force, Matthews totaled 51 tackles, 3 interceptions, and scored 2 defensive touchdowns. Matthews played a key role in the championship game against Amarillo, leading the team in tackles with 12 and recovering a Venom fumble on a first and goal play at the Force 1-yard line early in the first quarter.
Matthews was signed by the Force after his release from the Salina Liberty. At the time of his release, Matthews was a leader in tackles for the Liberty and was leading all of CIF with 4 interceptions and 101 interception return yards.
Matthews attended Victor Valley College where he served as a DB, KR, and PR for the ... In two seasons, he recorded 87 tackles and nine interceptions where he earned All-American, All-State, and All-Conference honors. He transferred to Virginia University of Lynchburg where he started in 38 games and recorded 11- tackles, 14 interceptions and 26 pass breakups.
