
Day Four Recap: 2023 Dick's Sporting Goods USHL Fall Classic

Second-year forward Matvei Gridin scored three times in leading Muskegon to a 6-2 win over Omaha.
It took until 17:07 of the first period when Joe Connor took a cross-ice pass from Cody Croal and fired a shot from the slot to score on the power play and put Muskegon in front by a 1-0 margin.
The Lumberjacks extended their lead when they scored two times before Omaha responded late in the second period. Ethan Whitcomb converted on a power play chance early in the period and Hunter Anderson scored at the 15:22 mark. Jamison Sluys tallied at 16:45 for the Lancers and at the end of two periods of action the Lumberjacks held a 3-1 lead.
Muskegon grew its lead to 4-1 on a goal from Matvei Gridin at 1:21 of the third before a shot from the blue line by Omaha defenseman Chase Cheslock beat a screened Paxton Geisel pulling Omaha within two at 3:12. Gridin got his second of the game at 5:47 to make it 5-2 in favor of Muskegon and then followed that with a breakaway goal at 12:56 for his first career hat trick.
Geisel had 32 saves in getting the win for Muskegon, while Croix Kochendorfer and Jack Olson combined to make 21 saves in the Omaha net.
USA NTDP 6, Dubuque 5 ot
USA NTDP trailed 3-1 at the end of the second frame, but rallied with a four-goal third period en route to a 6-5 overtime win in its first action of the 2023-24 USHL regular season.
Following a scoreless opening frame, the two teams found their offensive legs in second period, combining to score four times.
Chase La Pinta got things going at 4:48 with a power play marker for the Fighting Saints before Cole Eiserman, one of the top 2024 NHL draft-eligible players, lifted the puck over Dubuque goaltender Kevin Reidler less than a minute later and at 5:14 the score stood tied at 1-1. Fighting Saints defenseman Jayden Jubenvill's shot from out by the blue line made its way through a bevy of legs at 15:23 and when Andrew King scored at 16:32, Dubuque headed into the locker room after two periods owning a two-goal lead.
The two teams kept things going offensively in the third period, with six goals accounted for and when it was all said and done, the score stood 5-5.
USA NTDP won it in three-on-three overtime when defenseman Logan Hensler tallied the game-winner at 2:47. Hensler, a Wisconsin commit, took a shot from the slot that beat Kevin Reidler on the stickside. NTDP forward Austin Baker finished with three points with two goals and an assist.
Reidler had 25 saves for Dubuque and Jack Parsons finished with 10 stops for the NTDP.
Fargo 3, Des Moines 2 ot
Fargo trailed Des Moines 2-0, but responded with a goal before the end of the second period and then got another in the third to tie it before claiming the 3-2 win in overtime.
The Buccaneers struck first after Joe Gramer's screen shot from 50 feet out dented the twine at 11:16 of the opening period and after 20 minutes of action, Des Moines held a 1-0 lead.
Lubomir Kupco chipped the puck over Fargo goaltender Hampton Slukynsky at 4:31 of the second period as the Bucs went up by two. Fargo responded when forward Zam Plante scored on the power play after taking a pass from Mac Swanson at 16:52 of the second period and after 40 minutes of play, Des Moines held a 2-1 lead.
Fargo sent the game into overtime when Tom Leppa tallied at 6:41 of the third. Following a defensive zone face-off win by Swanson, Leo Gruba carried the puck all the way down the left side of the rink before putting the puck past Jonathan Reinholdt at the 3:50 mark to end the game.
Reinholdt finished with 19 saves and Slukynsky had 13.
Madison 2, Waterloo 1
Second-year forward Max Nagel scored twice in helping lift the Madison Capitols to a 2-1 win over Waterloo Saturday night.
Madison put 11 shots on goal and Waterloo had eight, but neither team was able to score in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Nagel forced a turnover at the offensive blue line before going in and beating Black Hawk netminder Jack Spicer with a shot that leaked through the pads for an unassisted goal at 18:30 of the second period and after 40 minutes of play, the Capitols led 1-0.
Nagel tallied his second of the game, jumping on a rebound to score at the 9:00-minute mark of the third. Less than a minute later John Mustard cut the lead to one when he found a loose puck in the left circle and fired a shot that beat Capitols goaltender Patriks Berzins low blocker side, but that was as close as it got.
Berzins stopped 22 of 23 shots for the Caps and Jack Spicer finished with 29 saves in the Waterloo net.
