David Davis Named SFC Kicker of the Year
August 7, 2009 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release
CHICAGO - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton kicker DAVID DAVIS has been named the SFC Kicker of the Year, as selected by a vote of arenafootball2 head coaches and members of the media. Davis, who earned the award in 2007 as well, becomes the first player in league history to win multiple Kicker of the Year honors.
Davis, who has spent all six seasons of his af2 career with the Pioneers, had a record-breaking campaign in 2009. He was nearly perfect on extra points, connecting on 129-of-134 attempts (96.3 percent). The USC alum's 96.3 point after conversion percentage is the highest single-season success rate in af2 history. He eclipsed the previous record set by A.J. Haglund in 2006 (93.5 percent: 116-of-124). Overall, Davis had 12 games in 2009 where he hit 100 percent of his PATs.
Davis' 129 extra points made also set a new league single-season record, surpassing the old record of 121 set in the af2's inaugural season by Quad City's Brion Hurley (2000). He also converted 6-of-9 field goals (league-best 66.7 percent success rate) to finish with 147 points (3rd among kickers in af2).
The 2009 season has been a continuation of a storied and successful kicking career for Davis. He is the af2's career leader in points scored by a kicker (693) and PATs made (573) and attempted (649). Davis became the first kicker in league history to tally over 500 points in 2008. He also holds the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton team record for career field goals with 40.
The 2009 af2 playoffs continue this weekend with the American and National Conference Semifinals on Saturday, August 8. On the American Conference side of the bracket, the No. 1 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers host the No. 5 Kentucky Horsemen at 7 p.m. ET and the No. 2 Iowa Barnstormers host No. 6 Green Bay Blizzard at 8 p.m. ET. On the National Conference side, the No. 2 Tulsa Talons host the No. 3 Bossier-Shreveport BattleWings at 8 p.m. ET and the No. 1 Spokane Shock host the No. 4 Boise Burn at 10 p.m. ET.
