Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
ELMIRA, New York - The Cincinnati Cyclones scored three special teams goals in a 4-2 win at Elmira on Wednesday night. The win gives the Cyclones a three game to none lead in the best of seven series for the North Division Finals title. A club playoff record two shorthanded goals guided the way, as the Cyclones ran their road record in the postseason to a perfect 4-0.
Elmira scored the only goal of the first period when Chris Korchinski collected his fifth goal of the season on a wraparound inside the right goal post. Mike Sgroi handed out the only assist on the score. The Jackals had two power play chances in the opening frame and were unable to capitalize. Cincinnati had one chance with the man-advantage and could not punch its ticket. The shot on goal favored Elmira, 10-9, in the opening period.
The Cyclones erupted for three second period goals to grab the lead for good. Bryan O'Hanley created a turnover at the Cincinnati blueline and led a charge to the Elmira goal, as Barret Ehgoetz stretched the defense down the left side. O'Hanley snapped off the shot that leveled the scores - the first of his pro playoff career at 8:46. Then, with the teams playing four on four hockey at 12:10, Kyle Rank grabbed a pass from Dustin Sproat to deke past Jackals goalie Michael Teslak and gave Cincinnati a 2-1 lead. The third goal of the period was a snap shot from the top of the goal crease on the power play from Matt Syroczynski. It was his seventh goal of the postseason and his league-best sixth with the man-advantage. Jimmy Kilpatrick started the play out of the left corner and fired the puck along the end boards into the right corner where Sproat re-directed it in front of the net for Syroczynski. It was the fourth three-plus period goal period for Cincinnati in the playoffs. The shots on goal favored the Cyclones, 9-6.
Cincinnati extended the lead to 4-1 when Barret Ehgoetz collected his second goal of the season-another shorthanded score. After working a two on one situation, Ehgoetz faked a shot and moved on the backhand to the top of the goal crease and slipped another shot past Teslak. The unassisted goal was Cincinnati's fourth shorthanded goal of the Kelly Cup playoffs. An Elmira goal with 3:58 to go made the final score 4-2. The shots on goal in the third period favored Elmira, 12-8. For the game, the shots were even at 26 apiece.
Ryan Nie won his second game of the postseason, stopping 24 shots. Michael Teslak took the loss, stopping 22 shots.
