AFL I Arena Football League (1987-2008)

Crush to Select from Field of 86

Published on October 2, 2002 under Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

NEW YORK – Former Arena Football League All-Rookie performers, former NFL starting quarterbacks and other talented players are among those the Colorado Crush can choose from when the AFL conducts the 2003 Expansion Draft for its newest team on Tuesday, October 22, 2002.

Players available to be drafted by Colorado include: former NFL quarterbacks DAMEYUNE CRAIG of the Indiana Firebirds, GLENN FOLEY of the New Jersey Gladiators and DANNY KANELL of the New York Dragons; one the AFL's elite receivers and former All-NFL Europe selection OS JOE DOUGLASS of the Chicago Rush; and two 2001 AFL All-Rookie Team members, Grand Rapids Rampage DS JOJO POLK and Indiana Firebirds DS CORNELIUS COE.

Also available is Orlando Predators K NICK GATTO, who made headlines in 2002 by becoming the first player ever to compete in the AFL with a one-arm disability. Gatto was born with a right arm that stops at the elbow.

"We're really looking forward to the expansion draft," said Colorado Crush Head Coach BOB BEERS. "This is where we get to build our team. Our entire coaching staff will continue to work very hard on evaluating players who will be available."

Colorado may choose a player from any current team who is designated as being "unprotected." Each team protected 16 players whose rights they control. All other players whose rights they control are deemed "unprotected" and hence eligible to be selected by Colorado. AFL Free Agents (players with three-or-more accrued seasons whose contracts have expired) and Exempt players do not count on the 40-player maximum offseason roster and are not draft eligible.

The draft, which is conducted via telephone conference, begins at 1:00 p.m. (ET) on October 22 and consists of 20 rounds. A maximum of five minutes per selection is allowed in each round. If the time limit expires, the pick is forfeited. Trades between the expansion team and other clubs may be made at any time prior to and during the draft.

The 2003 season kicks off with 16 teams and will be the first for the AFL on NBC. The network will broadcast 71 games next season, including all playoff games and ArenaBowl XVII on June 22.
