
CPIFL Announces Players of the Week
June 4, 2014 - Champions Professional Indoor Football League (CPIFL) News Release
Lawrence, KS. - Week 14 of the CPIFL season provided plenty of fireworks as Salina needed two overtimes to stay in contention for the top seed in the playoffs, Wichita was able to hold off Sioux City from completing a furious comeback and the Kansas Koyotes won their first game of the season. Three players have been recognized as CPIFL Players of the Week for their performance in Week 14.
Offensive Player of the Week: Stanley Jennings, Kansas Koyotes
Jennings led the Koyotes to their season high point total of 75 on Saturday in the Koyotes victory over the Oklahoma Defenders. Jennings had a hand in nine touchdowns on the night including five passing scores and four rushing. Jennings passed for 232 yards in the game and rushed for 63 yards. The 75 points was the third most scored by any team this season. Kansas wraps up their season on the road in Dodge City on Saturday.
Defensive Player of the Week: Vernon Brooks, Salina Bombers
Brooks had a huge hand in the Bombers overtime victory over Omaha on Saturday and thus keeping Salina alive for the top seed in the upcoming playoffs. Brooks intercepted two Chris Coffin passes in overtime to prevent the Beef from scoring. In the first overtime the Beef had driven the ball to the Salina 6 before the interception and in the second overtime the Beef drove down to the Salina 10 before being turned away by Brooks. Brooks added nine tackles in the ball game. Salina will look to win the #1 seed in the CPIFL playoffs as they visit Wichita on Saturday.
Special Teams Player of the Week: Terell Downey, Kansas Koyotes
Downey averaged 32.0 yards per kick return as he returned six kicks for 192 yards on Saturday vs. Oklahoma. His 57-yard return for a touchdown at the end of the second quarter is tied for the longest return in the history of the CPIFL. Downey leads the league with an average of 26.0 yards per kick return. Downey will look to keep igniting the Koyotes offense as the team visits Dodge City to close the season on Saturday.
The battle for the top spot in the playoffs comes down to Saturday night at Hartman Arena as Salina visits Wichita. The winner of the game will be the top seed in the playoffs. Also on Saturday night, Dodge City hosts Kansas. The CPIFL semifinals will take place on Saturday, June 14 with Champions Bowl II being contested on Saturday, June 21.
