Courage's James Player of the Week
June 24, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
ATLANTA (Monday, June 24, 2002) - Carolina Courage midfielder Venus James has been selected as the WUSA's Player of the Week for the Week ending June 22, 2002. James scored her first two WUSA goals and led her team to 3-1 win over the Washington Freedom on Saturday, June 22 to earn the weekly award.
James registered her first WUSA goal after stealing the ball from a Washington defender in the attacking third and then dribbling around Freedom goalkeeper Siri Mullinix in the 43rd minute. Ten minutes later, James hammered in her second goal when she headed home a Hege Riise freekick. After playing just 209 minutes in 10 games this season, James made her first start of 2002.
"(Venus) has been on fire in practice with consistency and productivity," praised Courage head coach Marcia McDermott following the match. "That translated into a great day on the field today."
James joined Carolina during the offseason after playing for San Jose in 2001. The former UCLA star played 11 games for the CyberRays in 2001, starting the first nine matches of the inaugural season. James was claimed by Carolina after San Jose waived her in January.
In addition to her two-goal performance on Saturday at Washington, James played the entire second half of Carolina's 3-1 loss to Philadelphia on June 19.
James received 22 points (8 first place votes), edging out Boston's Maren Meinert (19 pts.). Other players who collected votes were Melissa Moore of Philadelphia (7 pts.), Boston's Kristine Lilly (2 pts.) and Atlanta's Charmaine Hooper (1 pt.).
