Courage Sneak by Breakers

CARY, NC - An own goal by Boston's Angela Hucles in the 66th minute extended Carolina's winning streak to five matches as the Courage (10-2-3, 33 pts.) defeated the Breakers (4-7-5, 17 pts.) 2-1 on Saturday evening at SAS Stadium. The win moves Carolina into first place in the WUSA standings.

With the match tied at 1-1, Carolina regained the lead in the 66th minute on an own goal by Hucles. Forward Danielle Fotopoulos collect the ball in the area on a free kick by Unni Lehn. Hucles ran back to try to defend on the play, but directed the ball past teammate Tracy Ducar to give the Courage a 2-1 lead.

Birgit Prinz gave the Courage a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute with her eighth goal of the season. Carolina's Hege Riise started the play at midfield, pushing the ball to the right side of the pitch to Fotopoulos. The Carolina forward brought the ball down the right side. Before crossing the end line, Fotopoulos sent a driving cross into the area. The ball sailed across the goalmouth and connected with Prinz at the far post. On a diving header, Prinz buried the ball into the back of the net. Both Fotopoulos and Riise were credited with assists on the play. With the scores, Prinz and Fotopoulos each extended the WUSA's longest point-scoring streak to nine games. With the goal, Prinz extended her goal-scoring streak to five games, tying the WUSA record for consecutive game with a goal (tied with New York's Tiffeny Milbrett [7/15/2001 to 8/02/2001]).

Boston responded with a score of its own in the 59th minute. Kristine Lilly registered her sixth goal of the season to draw the match even at 1-1. From 16 yards out, Lilly blasted a shot on net. Goalkeeper Kristin Luckenbill got her left arm on the shot, knocking it down loose in the area. Lilly ran onto the loose ball and pushed it into the net. The goal extended the Boston midfielder's point-scoring streak to five games.
