Consistency Gets Columbus Kicker Wilson Overlooked

Published on June 5, 2007 under World Indoor Football League 2 (WIFL 2) News Release

Hard to believe any player can be overlooked in a four-team league, but that distinction can be claimed by Columbus Lions kicker Wes Wilson.

While Augusta's Shon Rowser may get the lions' share (pun intended) of the attention thanks to his 13 UNOs, and even Lions teammate Eugene Goodman has a special teams player of the month award thanks his kickoff returns, all Wilson is doing is leading most of the WIFL's kicking stats category.

After ten games, Wilson has nailed 83.3 percent of his PATs and eight field goals. While Osceola's promising newcomer Derek Scott was setting league records in kick scoring (13) and field goals (three) - but missing a PAT that would have put the Ghostriders up 52-51 with a minute to play, Wilson quietly notched his fourth 10-point game of the season.

"He's Mr. Consistency,'' head coach Jason Gibson said of Wilson, a former af2 star. "He has the experience and the accuracy you want from a special teams player."

Wilson leads Rowser 74-68 in the kick scoring sweepstakes.

ALWAYS SOMETHING FOR BARTIK: One week your car gets totaled. The next week, you throw a league record-tying eight touchdown passes ... and lose. Such has been the season for Daytona Beach quarterback Bo Bartik.

The fortunate thing is that Bartik survived a serious car accident two weeks ago with minor injuries. Last Friday's game in Augusta was his first back as a starter and while he matched Augusta's Mike Rathe touchdown for touchdown, the Thunder defense or special teams (one point) couldn't in a 66-49 loss.

Is eight TD passes the most by a losing quarterback in the indoor ranks this season? Nope. Bart Hendricks of the af2's Boise Burn heaved nine in a 79-70 to the Central Valley Coyotes, whose Clay Groefsema tossed eight and ran for four.

PLAYOFF UPDATE: Osceola's 58-51 loss to Columbus means that the 5-7 Ghostriders need to win their final two games to host the 7-6 Augusta Spartans in the June 23 playoff game. Osceola and Augusta meet Friday night in the James Brown Arena
