COLUMBUS, Ga. - Joey Conrad threw three touchdown passes and rushed for another, Eugene Goodman scored three touchdowns, and Wes Wilson kicked two key fourth-quarter field goals as the Columbus Lions defeated the Daytona Beach Thunder 53-43 in a World Indoor Football League game Friday, May 4 before 1,974 at AFLAC Field in the Columbus Civic Center.
The first-place Lions (7-2) overcame a league-record 291 yard passing performance by Thunder (2-7) quarterback Tavares Woodley to remain unbeaten at home and beat Daytona Beach for the third time this season.
Columbus opened a 26-6 lead on Goodman's 5-yard run with 41 seconds remaining in the first half, but the Thunder closed to 26-14 on Woodley's 32-yard pass to Travis McKinney 5 seconds before halftime.
Daytona Beach closed to seven points on three occasions and 46-43 on Bo Bartik's 35-yarder to McKinney with 47 seconds remaining. But Columbus recovered an onside kick and Conrad took in from five yards out to preserve the victory.
Playing without his two top receivers, Conrad was 11 of 20 for 149 yards and three touchdowns - one each Brandon Williams, Juval Winston and Damian Daniels, the league's leading defensive back with nine interceptions.
Goodman, the league's leading rusher, posted two rushing touchdowns and a 36-yard kickoff return. Wilson's two field goals, including a 47-yarder, helped the Lions maintain their fourth quarter lead.
McKinney finished with nine catches for 126 yards and four touchdowns for the Thunder, while Clinton Crump had five catches for 95 and two scores. Former arena football legend Barry Wagner had five catches for 91 yards in addition to a two-point conversion.
Columbus hosts Augusta next Saturday, while Daytona Beach hosts Osceola.
