Columbus Blue Jackets Add Eight Players on Second Day of 2008 Entry Draft

Syracuse, NY (June 23, 2008) - The Syracuse Crunch announced that the Columbus Blue Jackets wrapped up their ninth National Hockey League Entry Draft on Saturday, June 21 at Scotiabank Place in Kanata, Ontario. After taking left wing Nikita Filatov with the sixth pick during Friday's first round, Columbus selected eight players during rounds two through seven today.

Columbus used its second round pick, 37th overall, to select University of Wisconsin defenseman Cody Goloubef. The Mississauga, Ontario native had 10 points (4g, 6a) and 36 penalty minutes in 40 games last season. The youngest player in the WCHA and the second youngest in Division I hockey, he ranked second on the club with three game-winning goals.

The Blue Jackets traded their first pick of the fourth round (97th) to Boston in exchange for fourth round (107th) and fifth round (137th) picks. The club selected defenseman Steven Delisle with the 107th pick. The 6-foot-6, 209-pound native of Levise, Quebec tallied 29 points (6g, 23a) with 82 penalty minutes and a +8 plus/minus rating in 70 games in 2007-08 with Gatineau of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. He led club defensemen in goals, while ranking second is assists and points. He added 10 points (0g, 10a) with 16 penalty minutes in 19 playoff games to help the Olympiques win the QMJHL championship.

The club then used the 118th pick to select defenseman Drew Olson. In 2007-08, he notched 33 points (17g, 16a) and 34 penalty minutes in 25 games with Brainerd High School and was a finalist for Minnesota High School's Mr. Hockey Award.

Columbus used the first of three fifth round picks to select left wing Matt Calvert at No. 127. A 5-foot-9, 164-pound Brandon, Manitoba native, he notched 64 points (24g, 40a) with 53 penalty minutes and was +26 in 72 games for Brandon of the Western Hockey League. He ranked second on the club and fourth among WHL rookies in points and was named Brandon's Hardest Working Player.

The club took center/right wing Tomas Kubalik, a 6-foot-2, 189-pound Plzen, Czech Republic native with the 135th pick. He collected 3 points (2g, 1a) and 8 penalty minutes in 20 games with Plzen of the Czech Elite League and added 21 points (8g, 13a) and 50 penalty minutes in 22 games with Plzen's junior club.

Columbus selected defenseman Brent Regner of the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League with the 137th pick. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound native of Westlock, Alberta collected 47 points (8g, 39a) with 45 penalty minutes and was +11 in 72 games. He was second among club defensemen in points and ranked third overall in assists. In 137 career WHL games spanning three seasons, he has recorded 53 points (9g, 44a) with 64 penalty minutes and a cumulative plus/minus rating of +35.

In round six, Columbus used the 157th pick to select right wing Cameron Atkinson. The 5-foot-9, 165-pound native of Riverside, Connecticut notched 63 points (26g, 37a) and 10 penalty minutes in 28 games with Avon Old Farms (Conn.) High School and will play at Boston College in 2008-09.

The Jackets completed their draft by selecting left wing Sean Collins in the seventh round (187th). He had 115 points (51g, 64a) and 34 penalty minutes in 60 games with Waywayseecappo of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and won the MJHL's award for Hockey Ability and Sportsmanship.
